Tension-Type Headache Can Be Frequent & Frustrating
Tension-type headache ranges from occasional episodes to near-daily discomfort. It can interrupt work, study, and family life — and for some, over-the-counter pain relief only goes so far.
Common features include:
An aching discomfort (often both sides of the head)
Mild to moderate intensity that can drain focus and energy
Tight and tender neck, scalp, or face muscles
Stress, sleep, or mood often play a role
Episodes may last for hours to many days
From Adam: “Tension Type Headaches can be more painful and persistent that many people think. Acupuncture is an excellent therapy for many sufferers who want less headaches in their life.”

-
⬜ Inflammation Down-Shift
Easing neuro-inflammatory contributors that make nerves in the head and neck more sensitive.
-
⬜ Ease muscle tension
Helping tight muscles in the neck, scalp, and face relax.

Frequently Asked Questions: Important Information You May Need
How many acupuncture sessions will I need for tension headaches?
Most people will see a temporary result from a single treatment. However, research shows the best results come from completing a course of 8–12 sessions over 4–6 weeks. Some trials tested shorter courses of 6 sessions, others went as high as 20, but the most consistent benefits appeared when patients completed around 10 or more treatments.
From experience at our Gold Coast clinic, many patients notice early changes within the first few sessions — headaches feel lighter, recovery is faster, or sleep feels more refreshing. The more reliable shift, with fewer headache days each month, usually shows up by about the sixth treatment and consolidates as the course continues. That’s why we recommend around 10 sessions and reviewing your progress as we go.
How often should I come for acupuncture if I have frequent headaches?
Frequency matters, especially at the start. Clinical trials tested different schedules — from once a week to several times a week. Patients who came twice a week early on often improved more quickly, while those attending weekly still made gains, particularly in pain intensity, though the reduction in headache days took a little longer.
If your headaches are frequent or daily, I often suggest twice weekly sessions for 3–4 weeks, then tapering to weekly as things settle. If weekly is all you can manage, that’s still effective — it just builds momentum more gradually.
Is acupuncture safe for tension headaches?
Yes. Large reviews covering thousands of patients confirm that acupuncture for tension headaches has an excellent safety profile. Serious side effects are virtually unheard of. The most common reactions are minor — a small bruise, brief tenderness at a needle site, or mild light-headedness. These usually fade quickly.
At our Gold Coast acupuncture clinic, we use single-use sterile needles and tailor every treatment to your comfort and health history. Most people leave feeling calmer and lighter, not sore or worried.
Can I keep taking my usual headache medication while having acupuncture?
Absolutely. Many clinical trials allowed patients to keep using their normal medication during acupuncture. Some even found that combining acupuncture with medication gave better results than medication alone.
Over time, many patients discover they need fewer painkillers because their headaches are less frequent or easier to manage. If you’re on prescribed medicines, we’ll always recommend checking with your GP before making any changes. Acupuncture for tension headaches is designed to complement your current care, not suddenly replace it.
When will I start noticing results from acupuncture?
It varies. Some patients feel relief right away — clearer head, less tightness, or immediate pain easing. Others notice gradual improvement over several weeks.
Systematic reviews show that by the end of a treatment course, many patients experience more than 50% fewer headache days each month, with benefits often continuing for 3–6 months after finishing treatment. In practice, I watch for early signals like faster recovery after triggers, headaches that don’t linger as long, or being able to get through a workday without reaching for medication. These are good signs your body is responding.
Does acupuncture work better for chronic or occasional (episodic) tension headaches?
Both groups benefit. Research shows improvements for people with chronic daily headaches and for those with less frequent, episodic headaches. If headaches are constant, we usually recommend a more intensive early schedule. If they’re occasional, weekly sessions may be enough.
The key is tailoring acupuncture to your pattern — whether that’s reducing the constant background tension of chronic headaches or helping prevent episodic flare-ups. Either way, the goal is more headache-free days and fewer disruptions to your life.
What happens during an acupuncture session for headaches?
We’ll start by mapping your headache pattern — where the pain sits, what triggers it, and how it affects your day-to-day life. That guides the acupuncture strategy.
Treatment involves very fine, sterile needles placed at carefully chosen spots. Some are near the head and neck to release muscle tension directly, while others are on the arms or legs to influence the body’s broader pain-regulating systems. You might feel a dull, heavy, warm, or spreading sensation (often described as “strange but pleasant”).
Needles usually rest for 20–30 minutes. Many people find sessions deeply calming — it’s not unusual to drift into a light sleep while the treatment works.
How long do the benefits of acupuncture last for headaches?
One of the strengths of acupuncture is its durability. Large clinical reviews show benefits can continue for 3–6 months after treatment ends, sometimes longer. In some studies, people with chronic headaches even continued to improve during the follow-up period.
In my clinic, some patients return for “top-up” sessions every few weeks or around stressful periods to keep things under control. Many others enjoy long stretches without needing further care. The important thing is that the improvements tend to outlast the needles, giving you more headache-free days even after treatment has finished.
